Biography
John L’Estrange is an emerging Australian tenor, quickly gaining recognition as a versatile performer across opera, oratorio and art song. A graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, he holds a Bachelor of Music (Performance – Classical Voice) and studies under the esteemed Maree Ryan AM. Recognised for both academic and artistic excellence, he is named on the Dean’s List of Excellence in Academic Performance (The University of Sydney).

As a concert soloist, John has appeared in major works including Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Sparrow Mass, DvoÅ™ák’s Mass in D, Vivaldi’s Magnificat, and Haydn’s Missa Brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo. He has performed with Der Cäcilien Chor und Orchester, The Highlands Collective Orchestra, Ensemble Apex, The Concordia Ensemble, The Song Company and The Berrima Singers working under conductors such as Dr. Elizabeth Scott, Dr. Carlos Alvarado, Yvonne Parks, Antony Pitts and Thomas Wilson.

His operatic experience includes roles in Handel’s Semele, Tamerlano and Rodelinda; Monteverdi’s Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, Purcell’s The Fairy Queen, Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance and Cheetham Fraillon’s Parrwang Lifts the Sky.

An accomplished recitalist, John has performed in concert with Dr. Graham Johnson OBE for the Sydney Schubert Society, highlighting his deep affinity for Lieder and art song interpretation. He has also presented solo recitals at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, The Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Consulate of France in Sydney, with performances supported by the Embassy of France in Australia.

Equally at home in the recording studio, John has contributed to film and television soundtracks at Trackdown Studios, Sydney. His artistry has been recognised in competition, earning Second Prize in the 2023 Great Composer’s International Competition (Best Debussy Performance Category) and multiple accolades at the Sydney Eisteddfod, including the Ronald Dowd Memorial Prize for Male Voice.

Committed to continual artistic development, John has participated in masterclasses with internationally renowned artists, including Dame Emma Kirkby, Professor Michael Halliwell, and Dr. Graham Johnson OBE. With a growing profile in the Australian classical music scene, he is establishing himself as a tenor of distinction, bringing a refined musical sensibility and interpretative depth to every performance.
